Mapping

The blue dots represent where the drone captures an image of the terrain below it. The images are then “stitched” together using photogrammetry software, such as Pix4D of Dronedeploy.

Mapping

From these images an orthomosaic map is made, which can become a 3D model of the area flown. On this map the ground spacing distance between pixels, which is a function of several parameters, was just over 1 cm and is evident in the fine detail of the map. From these maps volumetric surveys can be made, contour lines established and measurements made

Mapping

From these maps you can precisely measure distances and height with two clicks of a mouse.

And if ground control points (usually survey pins) are used, then the map can be accurately located on the earths surface, this is called geo-referencing. Survey pins have a latitude, longitude and elevation for their exact location, and markers are place on top of the pin so that it shows up in the drones captured images. One control point is not geo-referenced and is used as a “check point” to determine the accuracy of the map, that is, it should align on the map spatially with the check points that have been geo-referenced.
